Since 2011, the total number of craft breweries in the region has more than doubled. While San Diego has attracted wide public interest and industry acclaim for its craft beer, little is known about its impact on the economy. To further study this issue, the National University System Institute for Policy Research (NUSIPR) evaluated industry labor data and measured its economic effects within the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.37.14-AM.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7730\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-04-22 at 9.37.14 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.37.14-AM.png?resize=300%2C107&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"300\" height=\"107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.37.14-AM.png?resize=300%2C107&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.37.14-AM.png?w=449&amp;ssl=1 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Overall, we found that:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><b>Craft breweries have a significant regional economic impact.\u00a0<\/b>In 2011, brewers and brew pubs generated a $299.5 million direct economic impact in San Diego County.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><b>The economic contribution of craft brewers is more than 1 \u00bd times greater than the economic impact of Comic-Con International, San Diego\u2019s largest annual convention.\u00a0<\/b>NUSIPR also found that the industry made $680.8 million in sales, and employed 1,630 workers in 2011.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.42.43-AM.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7734\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-04-22 at 9.42.43 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.42.43-AM.png?resize=300%2C207&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.42.43-AM.png?resize=300%2C207&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-Shot-2013-04-22-at-9.42.43-AM.png?w=507&amp;ssl=1 507w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>San Diego\u2019s craft brewing community is growing rapidly.\u00a0<\/b>More than half of the brewery licenses in the region have been issued since 2011. Larger, more established brewers are also expanding and adding new locations. Given that expansion, when 2012 figures are released we expect to find an even larger economic impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><b>Brewery tourism is an important part of San Diego\u2019s visitor industry.\u00a0<\/b>Unlike seasonal attractions, brewery tourism occurs year-round, and most of the major industry events in the region occur during non-peak visitor months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cSan Diego\u2019s craft brewing industry is a major economic driver in the region,\u201d remarked NUSIPR Senior Policy Analyst Vince Vasquez, whom authored the study. \u201cThat said, more partnerships and investment will be needed to advance industry development long-term.
