Thirty-six varieties of beer are typically created each year, many of which are never repeated. The Lost Abbey and Port Brewing have 18 bottled year-round beers.

The San Marcos brewery is considered the extension of the Pizza Port family that focuses on producing artistic and non-traditional beers. Tomme Arthur, the Brew Master and Co-founder of The Lost Abbey/Port Brewing, frequently works on creating new European-style and barrel-aged beers for the brand. Arthur gets his inspiration from the work of local muralist Sean Dominguez, who is commissioned by Arthur to paint a scene that will illustrate a future Lost Abbey brew. Then, Arthur will create a batch of beer from the painting. These paintings used can be seen throughout the brewery’s tasting room, or on the labels of the bottled beers.

The Lost Abbey’s Framboise de Amorosa sour ale was recently a winner at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival in Category 18: American Style Sour. This beer was inspired by a painting from Dominguez that depicted a lusty desirable woman, from which the decision to brew a beer full of raspberry flavor was conceived.

Coming up next Friday is a cool event at the brewery called Boos n’ Brews. Straight from the website: Join us in the tasting room for an evening carving Jack o’ lanterns and sipping fine Port & Lost Abbey brews. Bring your own pumpkin or get one at the brewery – it’s free! (Beers are – as usual – our very reasonable regular price).” Event goes from 5-9pm.

The Lost Abbey/Port Brewing’s production facility uses a 30 barrel system that produces 12,000 barrels of beer per year.
