{"id":216,"date":"2010-11-20T01:39:53","date_gmt":"2010-11-20T09:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/?p=216"},"modified":"2010-11-20T01:40:07","modified_gmt":"2010-11-20T09:40:07","slug":"meanwhile-in-deutschland-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/2010\/11\/20\/meanwhile-in-deutschland-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Meanwhile, in Deutschland&#8230; Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Here are some more notes from my time at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doemens.org\/index.php?id=2&amp;L=1\" target=\"_blank\">Doemens Academy<\/a> in Germany.\u00a0 Look for my &#8220;Into the Brew&#8221; column continuing in the December issue of <\/em>West Coaster.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>November 10<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Started the morning with more hands-on instruction in the filling plant.\u00a0\u00a0 We started with inspection technology for cleaned returnable bottles and then moved on to bottle filling, crowning and labeling.\u00a0 Now that we\u2019ve been through the whole process, we will be ready for packaging our dunkelweizen and hefeweizen next week.\u00a0\u00a0 For the afternoon it was more chemical analysis, starting with wort and finishing with beer.\u00a0\u00a0 After class Chris and I decided to go for a walk around town and made our way over to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andechs.de\/index.asp?lng=en\" target=\"_blank\">Andechser<\/a> Am Dom restaurant.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve been wanting to try some of their beer on tap but for the second time it\u2019s just too crowded to get a spot.\u00a0\u00a0 We ended up going over to check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.ayinger-bier.de\/?pid=263\" target=\"_blank\">Ayinger<\/a> restaurant and lucked into a freshly-tapped wooden barrel of their Jarhundert beer. \u00a0I think the softer mouthfeel from the gravity pour helps the malt flavors.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>November 11<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong><\/em> &#8211; This morning we had to get up extra early to make it to the 7:30 am bus departure from Doemens to go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brau-beviale.de\/en\/default.ashx\" target=\"_blank\">Brau Beviale<\/a> industry expo up in Nuremburg.\u00a0\u00a0 Not long after leaving on the bus I fell back asleep, but awoke just in time to hear Professor Sacher giving Nick a lesson on Roman-era Bavarian geography.\u00a0\u00a0 When we got to the Brau I was absolutely shocked at how huge it is.\u00a0\u00a0 There were over 1,400 presenters from the European and international beverage industry.\u00a0 The highlight of the day was a tasting of American-hopped beers that was put on by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usahops.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">USA Hop Growers<\/a> and was lead by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brewersassociation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brewers Association<\/a> president Charlie Papazian and Firestone Walker Brewmaster Matt Brynildson.\u00a0\u00a0 Literally every type of industry supplier was in attendance, and I can\u2019t wait to go back for a second day tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>November 12<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Day two at the Brau.\u00a0\u00a0 We stopped early at the Weyermann booth and got to taste an IPA as well as a swarzbier, which are nice changes of pace.\u00a0\u00a0 Checked out some vegetarian alternatives to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isinglass\" target=\"_blank\">isinglass<\/a> as well.\u00a0\u00a0 Lots of booths with droves of draught faucets. \u00a0Yakima Chief ended up being a good stop for a tasting of experimental hop varieties.\u00a0 We ended up meeting an intern at Siemens, a company that makes automation software.\u00a0 In his quest for Guinness he led us to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niroinc.com\/gea_liquid_processing\/craft_brewing_solutions.asp\" target=\"_blank\">GEA<\/a> booth (who are Huppmann and Tuchenhagen), where we were absolutely shocked to find cans of Surly beers.\u00a0 The American sale reps on hand were doing a good job of spreading the good word of California&#8217;s craft beer players.\u00a0\u00a0 The bus ride home to Munich was decidedly more cheery after a day of chatting up industry suppliers and drinking some awesome, free beer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some more notes from my time at Doemens Academy in Germany.\u00a0 Look for my &#8220;Into the Brew&#8221; column continuing in the December issue of West Coaster.
