The third weekend in July, Border X Brewing<\/a> hosted the 4th Annual Chicano-Con!, a three-day celebration of the Latino comic tradition. Events included a costume contest and superhero workshop for the younger visitors and a sketch clinic hosted by cartoonist Joaquin Junco, Jr. for the teenagers.<\/p>\n

A panel of local artists Joaquin Junco, Jr. and Lalo Alcaraz as well as Peruvian artist Javier Hernandez, here for the nearby San Diego Comic-Con, spoke and answered attendees\u2019 questions on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Comic-Con, \u201cWe\u2019re not in competition with them,\u201d said one of Border X\u2019s owners David Favela. \u201cWe could never compete\u2026the brewery just wants to give [Barrio Logan] residents a taste of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do that by giving out comic books for free,\u201d Favela continued, \u201cwhich were generously donated by the San Diego community. We have thousands of comic books \u2014 it\u2019s mind-blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comic books also played a part in Favela\u2019s integration into (Latin, South and North) American culture.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m first generation immigrant and I didn\u2019t know how to read or speak English,\u201d Favela explained. \u201cI taught myself to read [by] reading comic books\u2026between the pictures and the context, I could start figuring out patterns, and I just loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But reading comic books isn\u2019t the only tradition Border X is working to keep alive. About a month ago, Border X released the session beer named Tejuino sour. Tejuino, a pre-Colombian drink made by the indigenous people in Western Mexico, combines cucumber and key lime into a refreshing sunny-day sipping drink.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter working all day in the hot sun, I was like, \u2018I feel like I\u2019m getting my veggies,\u2019\u201d Favela joked.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s the art of brewing beer or drawing comics, Favela believes the Latino community deserves representation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, \u2018You know what? We\u2019re so close and there are so many kids here in the barrio who also, just like me, didn\u2019t have a chance to go to Comic-Con. What am I going to do about it?\u2019 And I decided, \u2018I\u2019m gonna do Chicano-Con!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

And thus, a new tradition was born in Barrio Logan, helmed by Border X Brewing: sessionable Latino beers paired with Latino comic books.<\/p>\n
