San Diego might be gray and gloomy, but summer \u2013 the unofficial beer and food fest season \u2013 is in full swing. For many of us summer means picnics, festivals, baseball, camping, beach days, and other fun activities that go hand in hand with day drinking. Summer is the perfect time for Session Beers.<\/p>\n

The Brewers Association\u2019s 2018 Beer Guidelines, released in March, states, \u201cDrinkability is key to a successful session beer. Beers exceeding 5.0% ABV (alcohol by volume) are not categorized as Session Beers.\u201d However, delving into the history or, more aptly, histories, of Session Beers can be a bit nebulous.<\/p>\n

Germany has Schankbier (0.5% \u2013 2.6%) and most of their Vollbiers (3.0% \u2013 5.3%) that align with Session from an ABV standpoint. Style\u2013wise, Germany has a lot of delicious Session Beers, such as K\u00f6lsch, Leichtbier, Berliner Weisse, Gose, HefeWeisse, Pilsners, Helles, and Radlers.<\/p>\n

Belgium has Table Beers (usually under 2.8%) and Table Saisons (3.5% \u2013 5.0%), as well as some of the lower ABV Witbiers, Pales, and Singles that could be categorized as Session Beers.<\/p>\n

Ireland has Irish Reds and Dry Stouts and Scottish brewers make low ABV, caramel\u2013forward beers sometimes sold as 60 Shilling (2.5% \u2013 3.2%) and 70 Shilling (3.2% \u2013 3.9%).<\/p>\n

English munitions workers during WWI were allotted two drinking sessions per day at 11 a.m. \u2013 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. \u2013 11 p.m. In order to remain sharp between the ears (read: coherent) during working hours, they drank beers between 3.0% \u2013 4.0%. While a majority of men were at war, women, called Munitionettes, worked in these munitions factories and first started going to pubs.<\/p>\n

Astoundingly, the Session Beers at work law remained on the books until 1988. It might come as no surprise that a huge percentage of low ABV beers originated in England. There are Cask\u2013Strength Ales, Milds, Bitters, Browns, Smaller Porters, and even the modern Golden Ales, with plenty of examples of each style brewed to session-strength.<\/p>\n

Immigrants brought Session Beers with them to the new world. Blondes, Cream Ales, Classic American Pilsners, Commodity Lagers, and even Session Pale Ales and IPAs became popular thirst quenching shift beers, as European traditions integrated into American culture.<\/p>\n

British purists will argue that Session Beers should always cap out at 4.0% ABV, while those using \u201csession\u201d as a marketing tool will push the ABV much higher. Brewers Association Guideline sticklers could also argue that session beers have a lower end range of 3.5% ABV and must mimic higher ABV styles; Ordinary Bitter and Berliner Weisse aren\u2019t technically considered Session Beers by Guidelines. For our sake, since they\u2019re generally under 5% ABV, we\u2019re including these beers to describe Session Beers in San Diego.<\/p>\n

What these beers lack in booziness, they more than make up for in flavor and drinkability. It\u2019s easy to see why Session Beers are one of the fastest growing markets right now, and why they are perfect anytime beers for you and your friends.<\/p>\n

The following list showcases the wide variety of Session Beers available around San Diego this summer. These beers are available pending brew schedules and production\/distribution levels. It\u2019s always best to check if these beers are currently available.<\/p>\n

Given this huge list of 400+ Session Beers, we divided them into two categories: 4.0% ABV and below, and beers between 4.1% \u2013 5.0%. Enjoy exploring. Cheers!<\/p>\n
