Today, the winners of the professional brewing competition held as part of the San Diego International Beer Festival<\/strong><\/a> were announced. San Diego County breweries brought home 18 gold, 22 silver and 21 bronze medals. The most prolific winners were Belching Beaver Brewery<\/strong><\/a>, which won four total medals, three of which were gold, and Pizza Port<\/strong><\/a>, which also collected four medals, one of which was gold. Three of each company\u2019s respective brewing locations combined for those wins while Council Brewing<\/strong><\/a> (which will soon have multiple facilities when it opens its Santee brewery and tasting room later this year) picked up the most medals of any single-location operation with three, two of which were gold.<\/p>\n

Other breweries to earn three medals from one spot were The Lost Abbey<\/strong><\/a>, Rip Current Brewing<\/strong><\/a> (which took gold and silver in the German-style bock category) and Home Brewing<\/strong><\/a>. Nine breweries won two medals. That group was highlighted by gold medalists Bagby Beer Co.<\/strong><\/a>, Duck Foot Brewing<\/strong><\/a>, Groundswell Brewing<\/strong><\/a> and Resident Brewing<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Particularly impressive was the fact San Diego brewing companies swept three of the 57 total style categories: \u00a0Brett & Other Sour Beer (gold\u2014Council Brewing, silver\u2014Toolbox Brewing<\/strong><\/a>, bronze\u2014The Lost Abbey), Australian\/International-style Pale Ale (gold\u2014Ballast \u00a0Point Brewing<\/strong><\/a>, silver\u2014Barrel Harbor Brewing<\/strong><\/a>, bronze\u2014Home Brewing) and Bold Stout (gold and silver\u2014Pizza Port, bronze\u2014Culver Beer Co.<\/strong><\/a>). Additionally, local mead producers earned two gold, two silver and one bronze (with ironically-named Miralani Makers District newcomer Lost Cause Meadery<\/strong><\/a> claiming one each and Oceanside\u2019s Golden Coast Mead <\/strong><\/a>nabbing the other two). Ramona\u2019s Turquoise Barn Cider <\/strong><\/a>led the cidery pack with a gold and silver in its respective categories.<\/p>\n

San Diego County\u2019s medal count was down by seven, going from 68 in 2017 to 61 this year. It\u2019s still a strong showing, but to put things in perspective, San Diego breweries swept a whopping eight style categories last year. And this year\u2019s San Diego International Beer Festival champion brewery isn\u2019t a local operation. Long Beach-based Beachwood BBQ & Brewing <\/strong><\/a>earned that distinction with a rather astounding four golds, three silvers and one bronze.<\/p>\n

The San Diego International Beer Festival will take place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds<\/strong> as part of the San Diego County Fair <\/strong><\/a>from June 15 to 17<\/strong>. The total list of local winners is as follows\u2026<\/p>\n
