{"id":17219,"date":"2017-05-22T15:20:07","date_gmt":"2017-05-22T22:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/?p=17219"},"modified":"2017-05-22T16:59:30","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T23:59:30","slug":"the-war-of-words-intensifies-before-10-barrels-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/2017\/05\/22\/the-war-of-words-intensifies-before-10-barrels-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"The War of Words Intensifies Before 10 Barrel&#8217;s Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many San Diegans aren&#8217;t happy that Anheuser-Busch InBev-funded 10 Barrel Brewing Company will soon open in the East Village, and the war of words has intensified\u00a0in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;San Diego Beer Fan&#8221; &#8212; now identified as Robert Esparza, a local beer festival organizer &#8212; came up with the idea to fly a banner reading &#8220;10 Barrel Is Not Craft Beer&#8221; over the company&#8217;s fundraiser block party this Saturday.\u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/10-barrel-is-not-craft-beer\">crowdfunding campaign<\/a> posted on May 13 surpassed the $900 goal in four hours, reaching $2,015 as of this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The chartered plane will take off from Gillespie Field in El Cajon around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, with\u00a0the pilot planning to bring\u00a0the banner\u00a0within eyesight of 10 Barrel&#8217;s event\u00a0between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. The banner was recently amended to include the URL <a href=\"http:\/\/fakecraftbeer.com\">FakeCraftBeer.com<\/a>, a website purchased by Esparza that links to a video by Whats On Draft TV denouncing the arrival of 10 Barrel, while promoting the release of 11 Barrel IPA, a collaboration beer made in protest by downtown brewpubs Monkey Paw, Resident, and Half Door. Starting on Sunday, a portion of proceeds from each pint of that beer will go to homeless and hunger causes in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><em>The San Diego Union-Tribune<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/entertainment\/beer\/sd-et-beer-05182017-story.html\">noted<\/a> that &#8220;several donors to the GoFundMe campaign represent local beer interests. They include Pat McIlhenney, co-founder of Alpine Beer; Virginia Morrison, co-founder of Second Chance Beer; Pariah Brewing; Wiseguy Brewing; Thunderhawk Alements and even Rancho Cucamonga\u2019s Kings Brewing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The story\u00a0was picked up by 10 News reporters, who\u00a0interviewed Esparza&#8217;s friend Brian Mitchell, proprietor of Pariah Brewing in North Park.\u00a0&#8220;These guys [Anheuser-Busch InBev] aren&#8217;t buying these companies because they like them or want their products to do well, they&#8217;re buying them because they&#8217;re losing market share,&#8221; Mitchell told the station\u00a0in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.10news.com\/news\/10-barrel-brewery-opening-soon-despite-backlash-from-community\">segment<\/a> that aired on May 18.\u00a0&#8220;So how do you beat your competitor? With that, we\u2019ll be pouring some great beers on\u00a0May 27th\u00a0and hope many new friends come join us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And in\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/10BarrelBrewing\/status\/864612725602779137\">cheeky tweet<\/a>, 10 Barrel referenced the aerial banner, saying,\u00a0&#8220;We&#8217;re matching every $ raised for this campaign and giving it to @SDHungerCo &amp; @SD_Coastkeeper.
