Last week, I looked at upcoming businesses in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bfsdn\"><strong>North County<\/strong><\/a>. Today is all about the western expanses of the region. Additionally, I\u2019m taking a look back at how some other brewery-owned venues I thought had promise actually turned out over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mikkeller.dk\/location\/mikkeller-brewing-san-diego\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mikkeller Brewing San Diego<\/a>, Miramar: <\/strong>Uber beer geeks are excited to see what outlandish gypsy brewer <strong>Mikkel Borg Bjergso<\/strong> does with this brick-and-mortar (a creative partnership with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alesmith.com\" target=\"_blank\">AleSmith Brewing Company<\/a> <\/strong>owner <strong>Peter Zien<\/strong>) and they\u2019ll find out on April 16, when the tasting room opens to the public with a beer-festival featuring standout locals and some of Bjergso\u2019s far-flung friends. Fans who remember when the business housed AleSmith\u2019s original tasting room won\u2019t recognize the joint\u2026or the beers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amplifiedales.com\" target=\"_blank\">Amplified Ale Works<\/a>, Miramar: <\/strong>The quality of this Pacific Beach-based brewpub\u2019s beers has gained it a nice following, but there\u2019s nothing quite so disappointing as driving there only to find the nano-kebabery is out of house-beer. Opening a production operation in one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hgfenton.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>H.G. Fenton<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s ready-to-brew <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hgfenton.com\/breweryigniter\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Brewery Igniter<\/strong><\/a> suites in the heart of \u201cBeeramar\u201d should fix that and allow this business to get to the next level and bring beers like Electrocution IPA to an inland clientele.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OB Brewery, Ocean Beach: <\/strong>It\u2019s been years in the making, but the skeleton of this three-story brewery, bar and restaurant at the end of Newport Avenue looks darn good. OB&#8217;s in the midst of a massive influx of brewery tasting rooms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturebrewingco.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Culture Brewing Company<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hessbrewing.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mike Hess Brewing Company<\/strong><\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belchingbeaver.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Belching Beaver Brewery<\/strong><\/a> and two small Kearny Mesa ops on the way), but a new brewery hasn&#8217;t touched down since <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pizzaport.com\" target=\"_blank\">Pizza Port<\/a> <\/strong>set up shop in 2010. The time is right for this project, so long as the beer is of good quality.<\/p>\n<p><u>Past Promising Projects: West<\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>2013: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benchmarkbrewing.com\" target=\"_blank\">Benchmark Brewing Company<\/a><\/strong> (Grantville; Grade\u2014A; to-style \u201cbeer-flavored beer\u201d and a delightful sampling space); <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonelibertystation.com\" target=\"_blank\">Stone Brewing World Bistro &amp; Gardens\u2014Liberty Station<\/a> <\/strong>(Point Loma; Grade\u2014A; the best Stone beers are coming from this beautiful brewpub\u2019s 10-barrel system); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moderntimesbeer.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Modern Times Beer<\/strong><\/a> (Lomaland; Grade\u2014B; beers don\u2019t wow, but are defect-free, biggest points earned for tasting-room and can d\u00e9cor); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintarcherbrewery.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Saint Archer Brewery<\/strong><\/a> (Miramar; Grade\u2014C; they figured out how to make good beer just in time to sell out, but never figured out how to develop heart or soul)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alesmith.com\" target=\"_blank\">AleSmith Brewing Company<\/a><\/strong> (Miramar; Grade\u2014A; from 20,000SF to 105,500SF with no quality collapse and county\u2019s largest tasting room), <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitterbrothers.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bitter Brothers Brewing Company<\/a><\/strong> (Bay Ho; Grade\u2014B; brewing by-committee an interesting MO, but initial beers are solid); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duckfootbeer.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Duck Foot Brewing Company<\/strong><\/a> (Miramar; Grade\u2014B; went beyond all-gluten-free angle to just-plain-good beer, gluten or no)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the second of a four-part series assessing the most hopeful of San Diego\u2019s in-progress brewery projects.
