{"id":11854,"date":"2015-09-26T12:48:41","date_gmt":"2015-09-26T19:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/?p=11854"},"modified":"2015-10-03T17:20:51","modified_gmt":"2015-10-04T00:20:51","slug":"sd-gabf-winners-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/2015\/09\/26\/sd-gabf-winners-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"SD Brewers Kill It at 2015 Great American Beer Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After several years in which San Diego County breweries had strong, but annually declining performances at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Great American Beer Festival<\/strong><\/a> (GABF), the 2015 edition of the country\u2019s largest and most prestigious brewing competition saw a whopping 19 medals awarded to San Diego breweries (20 if you count the silver to San Diego-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karlstrauss.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Karl Strauss Brewing Company<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Costa Mesa brewpub for its Singularity American-style black ale).<\/p>\n<p>Held each year in Denver, Colorado, GABF takes place at the Colorado Convention Center and gets bigger each time out. This year, 242 judges from 15 countries judged more than 6,000 beers from 1,552 brewing companies, vying for gold, silver and bronze medals in 92 beer style categories. Each brewery that received the opportunity to enter the competition was allowed five entries per brewery-equipped location.<\/p>\n<p>Each of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pizzaport.com\" target=\"_blank\">Pizza Port<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s four San Diego County brewpubs won at least one award. San Diego breweries nearly swept the Coffee Beer category altogether. And first-time winners abounded. But no rookie win was more unexpected or prestigious than that of Santee-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bnsbrewinganddistilling.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>BNS Brewing and Distilling Co.<\/strong><\/a>, which shocked the industry by beating out 335 other India pale ales to win the competition\u2019s most highly contested category\u2014IPA. As big a deal as that was, one brewery did even better. San Marcos\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ripcurrentbrewing.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rip Current Brewing Co.<\/strong><\/a> was named the \u201cVery Small Brewery of the Year\u201d for 2015 behind gold and silver medals earned in the Bock and Scotch Ale categories, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The following is a list of all of the San Diego County winners from the 2015 GABF competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Very Small Brewery of the Year: <\/strong>Rip Current Brewing Co., San Marcos<br \/>\n<strong>Coffee Beer: <\/strong>Gold\u2014Zumbar Chocolate Coffee Imperial Stout, New English Brewing Co., Sorrento Valley; Bronze\u2014Bacon &amp; Eggs, Pizza Port, Ocean Beach<br \/>\n<strong>India Pale Ale: <\/strong>Gold\u2014Revolver IPA, BNS Brewing &amp; Distilling Co., Santee<br \/>\n<strong>Session India Pale Ale: <\/strong>Gold\u2014The Coachman, Societe Brewing Co., Kearny Mesa<br \/>\n<strong>Wood &amp; Barrel-Aged Sour Beer: <\/strong>Gold\u2014Veritas 015, The Lost Abbey, San Marcos<br \/>\n<strong>American-Belgo-Style Ale: <\/strong>Gold\u2014Le Freak, Green Flash Brewing Co., Mira Mesa<br \/>\n<strong>Bock: <\/strong>Gold\u2014Break Line Bock, Rip Current Brewing Co., San Marcos<br \/>\n<strong>Scotch Ale: <\/strong>Silver\u2014Black Lagoon Scottish Strong, Rip Current Brewing Co., San Marcos<br \/>\n<strong>Oatmeal Stout: <\/strong>Silver\u2014Scripps Pier Stout, South Park Brewing Co., South Park<br \/>\n<strong>Session Beer: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Guillaume, Pizza Port, Ocean Beach<br \/>\n<strong>International-Style Pale Ale: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014San Diego-style IPA, Karl Strauss Brewing Co., La Jolla<br \/>\n<strong>Imperial India Pale Ale: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Teahupo\u2019o, Breakwater Brewing Co., Oceanside<br \/>\n<strong>American-Style Amber\/Red Ale: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Shark Bite Red, Pizza Port Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad<br \/>\n<strong>Double Red Ale: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014GRAMBO, Pizza Port, Solana Beach<br \/>\n<strong>French- &amp; Belgian-Style Saison: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Saison, URBN St. Brewing Co., El Cajon<br \/>\n<strong>Other Belgian-Style Ale: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Witty Moron, Stone Brewing World Bistro &amp; Gardens, Liberty Station<br \/>\n<strong>Export Stout: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Z-Man Stout, Pizza Port, Carlsbad<br \/>\n<strong>South German-Style Hefeweizen: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Windansea Wheat, Karl Strauss Brewing Co., Pacific Beach<br \/>\n<strong>Chile Beer: <\/strong>Bronze\u2014Serrano Pale Ale, Ballast Point Brewing &amp; Spirits, Scripps Ranch<\/p>\n<p>San Diego County brewers brought home six gold medals, two silvers and 11 bronzes, with 10 of the awards going to breweries located within the actual City of San Diego. Nearly San Diegan neighbors that also won include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aftershockbrewingco.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Aftershock Brewing Company<\/strong><\/a>, which took bronze for its oatmeal cookie-flavored porter in the Herb and Spice Beer category, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garagebrewco.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Garage Brewing Company<\/strong><\/a>, which won gold for its Bucket Seat Blonde in the Munich-style Helles category. Both companies are based in Temecula, California.
