It just keeps getting better and better for craft beer lovers in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Greeted immediately by the man himself in the hallway, we got down to taster flight-business.\u00a0 We were accompanied by his wife\/marketing team, Lorah, who proclaimed, \u201cI promote him because I love him.\u00a0 I promote his beer because it\u2019s amazing.\u201d\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t just saying that, either &#8211; as a blind taster in a homebrewing club years back, she unknowingly helped choose her husband\u2019s brew as the one that would go to the competition.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Travis\u2019 past makes us more than hopeful for the future: at Russian River in Santa Rosa, he was highly involved in brewing many batches of Pliny the Elder.\u00a0 Not only was he instrumental in creating this amazing Double IPA, but for \u201cBlind Pig IPA, Damnation,\u00a0Temptation, and Supplication (just to name a few).\u201d\u00a0 He bolstered his resume even more as Lead Brewer at The Bruery in Placentia.\u00a0 The list of his amazing beers goes on and on.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some quick facts we learned about the Man of the House:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; He and wife Lorah met at Saddleback College, and later earned their respective degrees at Sonoma State.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; The couple currently has over forty hot pepper plants at their home (Travis makes chili-infused oils and hot sauces in his spare time).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; Their Australian-shepherd mix\u2019s name is Barley.\u00a0 The dog was originally named Simcoe, after the hop strain, but after a few days, Barley seemed a better fit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; His favorite style to brew: Lagers, because he doesn\u2019t have much experience with them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; His favorite style to drink at the moment: Sours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; What he misses about his job in Northern California: The equipment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; What he loves about his new job in San Diego: The freedom.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0114.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114 \" title=\"IMG_0114\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0114.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0114.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0114.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0114.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0114.jpg?w=3000&amp;ssl=1 3000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Jeff Hammett, Mike Shess, Travis Smith, Lorah Smith, Ryan Lamb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Travis is eager to make a name for himself, not as that-guy-who-worked-at-Russian-River, but as a passionate new member of the San Diego Craft Beer Community.\u00a0 He\u2019s doing a great job so far \u2013 all of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lajollabrewhouse.com\/beer.php\" target=\"_blank\"> house brews<\/a>, with canine-related terms for names, were exceptional (and available for growler fills, with distribution plans to be determined).<\/p>\n<p>The Crossbreed Blonde Ale was light and crisp.\u00a0 It definitely had more hops than any normal kolsch-style brew.\u00a0 A hybrid fitting of the name.<\/p>\n<p>The Fleabite Bitter was next.\u00a0 The description was right on: this English Pale Ale was not like most, employing American hop varieties, which provided \u201cmilder earthy aromas and flavors.\u201d\u00a0 I could drink this beer all day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0116.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-115 \" title=\"IMG_0116\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0116.jpg?resize=225%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0116.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0116.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/archives.csusm.edu\/westcoastersd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_0116.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Jolla Brew House was also serving The Bruery Ex-Loakal, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Alaskan Smoked Porter, Green Flash West Coast IPA, Airdale Afterburner (Amber Ale), Lightning Thunderweizen, and Trumer German Style Pilsner <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Pariah, \u201cintended to satisfy those with a craving for hops,\u201d was the clear standout.\u00a0 There were definitely some similarities to Pliny the Elder, with a terrific malt character that perfectly complemented the outrageous amount of hops (including the \u201cC\u201d varieties: Cascade, Centennial, Columbia and Chinook, as well as Amarillo). When asked if I would like a pint of any of the tasters, I had no second thoughts.\u00a0 This is an incredible beer.<\/p>\n<p>Sightsound Stout finished off the round of tasters, with a great roasty flavor and moderate hints of chocolate and coffee.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a \u201cbig\u201d beer like many stouts thanks to its light body, which was a great part of its appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Determined to keep innovating, Travis has a Double IPA in the fermenter that should be ready for <a href=\"http:\/\/sdbw.org\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Beer Week<\/a>.\u00a0 Help La Jolla Brew House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/La-Jolla-United-States\/La-Jolla-Brew-House\/152835804750859\" target=\"_blank\">name it<\/a>!\u00a0 In five weeks time, you\u2019ll be able to enjoy a dark Mexican lager called \u201cDirty Sanchez.\u201d\u00a0 In the summer, \u201cDonkey Show,\u201d a light Mexican lager, will be ready.<\/p>\n<p>All kidding aside, La Jolla Brew House has undergone a complete renaissance. General Manager Ryan Dhu, eager to change hearts and minds, expressed, \u201cEverything is going in the right direction \u2013 we now have one of the best young brewers in America.\u00a0 We also have a new chef who is turning this place around with his energy.\u00a0 We feel very blessed.\u201d\u00a0 I in turn felt blessed for the media-only sneak-peek of their<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lajollabrewhouse.com\/events.php\"> Celebration of Change event<\/a> that is happening tonight, October 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, from 7p.m.-11p.m.\u00a0 Don\u2019t miss it!
