This past Friday, Thunderhawk Alements’ co-founder Jonathan Barbarin took to Facebook to announce the impending closure of the Miramar brewery. The final days for to-go orders will be Saturday, June 6 (12 – 3 p.m.) and Saturday, June 13 (12 – 3 p.m.). In the Facebook post, Barbarian did not mention the pandemic but rather a falling out in the ownership ranks. In October, Thunderhawk won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival for the American-style Black Ale “Bowie Knife.”
Barrio Logan-based Thorn Brewing has a new director of brewing operations: Shawn Steele. Steele has more than two decades in the industry, most recently working at Rincon Reservation Road Brewery. The move allows company co-founder Eric O’Connor to focus on the quality control/assurance program as well as R&D. Thorn Brewing also welcomed brewer Josh Coombs from Green Flash.
Miramar newcomer and non-alcoholic beer maker Athletic Brewing is hosting a “drive-thru welcome event” this Thursday, June 4 from 3 – 7 p.m., offering a free six-pack to the first 250 visitors; essential workers (firefighters, police offers, hospital workers or emergency personnel) will get an extra six-pack with ID. Currently, there are no plans for a public tasting room at the location. Athletic is located at 7606 Trade St.
