Thorn Brewing has been hard at work on an event space directly west of its Barrio Logan brewery and tasting room. Coming in at 7,000 square feet, the “Side Yard” will make its official debut this weekend, when Thorn hosts a Mexican Independence Day celebration. Dubbed Fiesta de Independencia, that two-day arts-and-music festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15.
The event is the first of numerous “Side Yard festivals” planned for the space, and the brainchild of Side Yard event coordinator Ernie Salgado. Known throughout the Barrio Logan for his work as a branch manager for Salud Tacos, Salgado is excited to present an event so in tune with the neighborhood and its residents.
“We are thrilled to be able to display and be a part of the Barrio Logan community and its culture,” says Salgado.
Fiesta de Independencia will feature live music from noon to 10 p.m., both days, with Bulevar Descarga headlining Saturday night. Local artists will include Cesar Casteneda, Hector Villegas, Ricardo Islas and tattoo artists Luke Weessman. Food will be the charge of Home & Away and, in addition to Thorn Brewing beers, cocktails and tequila from Tequila MiCAMPO will be available.
Tickets are for sale online (admission is free for children) and a portion of proceeds from the event will benefit Family Health Centers of San Diego.
“Being able to give back has always been a goal of ours when thinking about how to best use this space,” says Salgado. “We want to recognize local artists, musicians and, most importantly, give the community a space to achieve all of this.”
