From the Beer Writer: It might not be the watering hole that’s closest to Petco Park, but come Padres season, my most frequent pre-gaming spot is The Local. It has an atmosphere and tasty grub that’s perfect for game day, but the real reason I keep coming back are the beers from in-house operation, Resident Brewing. While IPAs ranging from hazy to coconut-infused are splendid, the best pre-game beer on the board right now is Bankers Pils. Crisp and dry, yet equipped with subtle toasty, crackery notes that smack of the Old World, it’s a well-made pilsner. The punny nod to a ‘hood not far from Resident’s Gaslamp Quarter digs is the only laughing matter where this beer is concerned.
From the Brewer: “They say pilsners are ‘naked,’ since the style doesn’t have enough bitterness, roast, or acidity for off-flavors to hide behind. Bankers Pils is an exhibitionist. Malt flavors of crackers and freshly baked bread form the foundation of our Czech-style Pilsner. The brewers’ exclusive use of Czech Saaz hops imparts a delicate floral aroma and contributes just enough bitterness to give this Bohemian pilsner a crisp, refreshing finish.”—Craig Nelson, Head Brewer, Resident Brewing
