Beer Briefs: Beerfish, Align, The Lost Abbey

A collab-only brewery, mystery maybe and business as usual…for now

February 21, 2019 By Brandon Hernández

Thirsty for some quick-hit updates from world of #SDBeer? Read on and quench that yearning.

Seafood-centric North Park eatery Beerfish has a rather unique craft beer concept in the hopper: a brewery. Converting a venue to a brewpub with the addition of nano-sized equipment is nothing new to San Diego, where this model has been employed by the likes of Escondido’s Plan 9 Alehouse and Del Cerro’s KnB Bistro. What makes Beerfish’s brewery plan its own animal is owner Abel Kaase’s intention to have the brewery operated exclusively by a rotating cast of guest brewers, making each beer a “collaboration.”

One of the earliest pioneers at Miramar’s Miralani Makers District, Align Brewing founder and brewer Andrew Heino, is working with an undisclosed group of entrepreneurs who have owned breweries in the past on a large buildout for a production facility that will allow all parties involved to expand their product lines. Details are limited, but more information will come as this project develops.

In a surprising turn of events, leadership at San Marcos triple-threat Port Brewing / The Lost Abbey / The Hop Concept has made the decision to stick with the company’s existing tasting room. This comes after months of planning to set up a new sampling space in the western-most portion of their headquarters following acquisition of additional warehouse space. Even though that project is off, the company says it will continue to explore other potential tasting room options.
