“Beet Cancer” debuts Friday at Mike Hess Brewing locations

Brewery sets $50,000 goal for pediatric cancer research

January 24, 2019 By Ryan Lamb

Back in August, Mike Hess Brewing (MHB) co-founders Mike and Lynda found out their daughter, Keely, had a rare form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. She’s been undergoing treatments at UC Davis Medical Center and Rady’s Children’s Hospital ever since.

Tomorrow, the brewery will release “Beet Cancer” with the goal of raising $50,000 for pediatric cancer research via TheTruth365 and The Pablove Foundation. The beer is a Belgian wit made with purple potatoes in the mash and beets in the hop back.

“Of the federal funds that go to cancer research, only four percent goes to pediatric cancer research,” Mike Hess told Eric Kahnert of CBS 8 News yesterday. “In the last 35 years, only three new drugs have come to market for kids with cancer.”

“Beet Cancer” goes on tap at all three county MHB locations at 4 p.m. tomorrow: North Park’s flagship brewery (3812 Grim Ave), Miramar’s original location (7955 Silverton Ave #1201), and Ocean Beach’s satellite tasting room (4893 Voltaire St).
