Deft Brewing temporarily closed

Bay Park brewery falls victim to burst water line, working to re-open

January 18, 2019 By Brandon Hernández

A burst water line caused significant damage to Bay Park's Deft Brewing on Thursday

Deft Brewing (the makers of West Coaster’s current Beer of the Week, DoubleDeft Secret) is closed indefinitely. Yesterday, a water main burst at the Bay Park brewery and tasting room at 5328 Banks Street. The company shared news of this development—which left the entire facility with a layer of standing water and other assorted damage—on its Facebook page. A follow-up post earlier today stated that Deft’s tasting room will be closed today and tomorrow.

“We are still unsure of when we can reopen, but we should know by tomorrow afternoon,” says Deft co-owner Morris Nuspl. “The cleanup is going well, but the walls will need to be repaired and we are awaiting test results that will ultimately tell us if we’ll be allowed to open the tasting room to the public as soon as Sunday, and allow us to meet a commitment we have for a pre-wedding party Saturday night.”

The above scenario would be best-case, but Nuspl says there is a chance repairs may require a week or more of down-time. Additionally, needed structural repairs to the building—repairing the underground water line, refilling the sink hole and restoring the foundation—figure to impact Deft’s brewing schedule for weeks. With any luck those repairs will not further impact the tasting room schedule.

“We are hoping and praying,” says Nuspl.. “A good friend of ours from Germany commented that, where he is from, a burst pipe is actually good luck, so, given the size of this pipe, we are hoping for some really good luck.”
