On Tuesday, North Park beer bar Tiger!Tiger! will host Ting Su from Los Angeles’ Eagle Rock Brewery for a fundraising event. Eagle Rock was recently sued over their monthly “Women’s Beer Forum”; according to Eater LA, “A member of Eagle Rock Brewery’s staff reportedly informed the emailer (mistakenly) that the events were for women only, leading to a filed discrimination claim through the Department of Fair Employment and Housing.”
“On occasion, we would have men attend, present, and even participate in the discussions,” Su told Eater LA. “It was simply named ‘Women’s Beer Forum’ because I wanted to create a comfortable, safe environment for more women to actively join the conversation about craft beer.”
Su and Eagle Rock ending up settling instead of battling in court.
“We think this is bullshit and wanna help do something about it,” says Jeff Motch of Tiger!Tiger!
“Thanks to the amazing support we’ve received from the community so far, we’re continuing to raise funds to contribute toward our ongoing efforts of getting the loophole in the Unruh Act closed,” Su told West Coaster. “We hope to prevent this from continually happening to minority groups and small businesses, who try to engage under-represented members of their community. I’m currently working with attorneys and the CCBA to try to get this done. It’ll be a long road, but one worth taking if it means protection for our amazing community of breweries and small businesses.”
The event on Tuesday starts at 5 p.m. and a Q&A with Su begins at 8 p.m. Three dollars from every Eagle Rock beer will go to their GoFundMe campaign, which quickly surpassed the initial $10,000 goal.
