Guadalupe Brewery in Carlsbad and Mjødhall Meadery have joined forces to design and craft a braggot (a beer & mead hybrid made with honey, barley malt, and hops) to raise funds for Alexa Castillo of Vista, CA.
Alexa is the daughter of two core members of the North County Homebrewers Association (NCHA), a local homebrew club supported by both Raul Deju of Guadalupe Brewery and Eric Olson of Mjødhall Meadery. Alexa, who is 15 years old, was diagnosed in March with stage IV osteosarcoma in her right shoulder, which has metastasized to both of her lungs.
The family has started a GoFundMe campaign in order to raise money to help pay for treatment expenses not covered by insurance, including integrative treatments to improve Alexa’s chances for survival.
Alexa’s Hope Braggot was created with caramelized, locally-sourced orange blossom honey and an English IPA beer base (7.5-8% ABV). It will be sold by the growler* and limited 1/6bbl kegs, starting this Friday, June 8, between 12 and 9 p.m. Guadalupe Brewery is located in Carlsbad at 674 El Camino Real, Suite D.
*All growlers brought in from other breweries can be filled. New growlers will also be available at the brewery for purchase.
