This Friday, September 5th Karl M. Strauss would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To commemorate the occasion, the company he helped create has redesigned the Amber beer label with a hand-sketched image of Karl from his younger days.
Poway bar Phileas Foggs is getting into the spirit with a Karl-inspired party starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Limited-edition “keep-the-glass” steins will be filled with Karl Strauss Amber, which is brewed with a blend of Munich and caramel malts before Cascade hops come in to balance out the beer. “Every time I drink a pint, I toast Karl,” says Brewmaster Paul Segura, who will be in attendance on Friday to introduce a short video presentation of “Karl Strauss: The Man.” Segura rates Amber as one of his favorites: “It has a bready, caramel flavor that’s easy on the palate and pairs well with a ton of foods.” Speaking of which, the Phileas crew will serve up Amber-braised bratwursts, giant Bavarian pretzels and cinnamon dessert pretzels as its food specials for the evening.
Other choices on the beer side include Tower 10 IPA, Tower 20 IIPA, Red Trolley Ale, Pintail Pale Ale, Flan-Diddly-Anders Red, Big Barrel Double IPA and Nolgers Coffee Porter, Olde Ale and Tripel. A few “cellar reserves” (22nd Anniversary, 23rd Anniversary, Queen of Tarts and Two Tortugas) will go on between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., and an announced cask ale will be tapped at 3:30 p.m.
