Join Kinsee Morlan of CityBeat, Jeff Hammett of WC/San Diego Beer Blog and artist Katie Scott for a night of beer and art at Bottlecraft this Thursday.
“Craft beer is big in San Diego and the bubbling underground art scene is growing,” says Morlan. “My hubby Jeff Hammett of San Diego Beer Blog and I will marry the two — fine art and craft beer — through the first of an interesting new series of intimate, hopefully educational events.”
Scott’s work is currently up at the Little Italy bottleshop/tasting room, but the exhibition officially concludes on Thursday with “Beer + Art – Drawn: New Works by Katie Scott” from 7 – 10pm. Hammett will be curating flights of beers with a San Diego focus as Morlan introduces Scott and talks about her work.
“Beer fans will hopefully leave with an enriched appreciation for art and art fans will hopefully leave with a new-found love for quality craft beer,” explains Morlan, who met artist Scott when CityBeat ran one of her pieces on the cover. “She had this really interesting story about losing all of her art materials in Katrina and moving to San Diego and feeling like she wanted to tap into the local art scene but didn’t quite know where to start. We kept in touch after the story and cover ran and she came to mind the second Jeff and I started conceptualizing the event. I appreciate art of all genres, but, for the series, I think the most accessible to the beer lovers in the crowd will be really great drawings that show off nearly perfect line work and skill.”
Morlan and Hammett, who just celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary, hatched the idea for this type of event as the two would split their week between art openings and beer events. “Blind Lady Ale House does Monday night art events every now and again, and sometimes art openings will have quality craft beer on hand, but for the most part, the two worlds are pretty separate. We wanted to bring the two together and create an event we’d want to go to ourselves,” says Morlan, who has already had offer from other venues that want to host the next Beer + Art event. “If any brewers or artists out there are interested in getting in touch with us, they can contact us through sandiegobeerblog.com“
