Every Monday we will highlight a local brewery that deserves a bit of attention. This week’s pick: Lightning Brewery.
Tucked inside an industrial park in Poway, Lightning may not be the easiest brewery to get to, but it is definitely worth the trip. Get tasters of their current seasonals, Electrostatic Ale and Ionizer Lager, for just $1 each. Or go for 6 tasters for just $5 – WC favorites also include Thunderweizen Ale and Fair Weather Pale Ale; barrel-aged specialty beers aren’t uncommon sights in the conversation-driven tasting room, either.
If you want to know why their motto is “Better Beer Through Science,” come find out – tasting room hours are Friday 1:30-5:30PM and Saturday 1:00-5:00PM.
Can’t make it out to Poway? Lightning’s website has a “find our beers” section that lists all of their accounts around the county. Make sure to note the disclaimer that listed accounts may not currently have Lightning beer; it’s worth a phone call if a beer’s description strikes your fancy.
There are two events this week that will feature Lightning Brewery.
– Tomorrow at 7PM, The Tipsy Crow will be tapping a cask of Lightning’s Extra Special Bitter. The beer’s description, via Lightning: “This recipe has been brewed largely unchanged for upwards of 25 years while our head brewer was still in graduate school. Our version is hoppier, more malty, and has a higher ABV than its British cousin, but retains a suprising balance and drinkability. A tall cream-colored head tops off this gorgeous dark amber beer.”
– Saturday at BrewFest Encinitas. Lightning will be one of 11 local breweries showcased up at Mira Costa College from 4:00-7:00pM. 10 taster tickets cost $40, and gastrotruck food will also be available for purchase.
