A Long Time Coming

November 3, 2010 By Ryan Lamb

The wait is over, San Diego – six-packs of Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA are finally here.  Previously only available in twenty-two ounce bottles or on tap, this award-winning brew has finally joined the twelve-ounce ranks.  “It’s been a long time coming,” commented Head Brewer/Distiller Yuseff Cherney, still jet-lagged from his recent business trip to Italy.

Owner/Founder Jack White said that BP is “very excited” about the new development. In terms of distribution, White said that Sculpin is “going to stay local right now” – the exception being select outside markets such as Philadelphia.

The coveted sixers won’t be available at the tasting room, but Distribution Manager Ryan Glenn said that the award-winning brew “should hit the retailer’s shelves just in time for Beer Week,” with a projected price tag of $14.99 or $15.99.

The IPA is one of the company’s most popular choices – it has outsold their prestigious Big Eye IPA over the last few weeks.  Ballast Point currently has a year-round lineup of five beers.  Glenn added that some time in the future the brewery is “looking to make it six” with Sculpin.  Director of Sales Earl Kight remarked: “That is the ideal situation.”

In the coming weeks, you’ll also be able to find your favorite BP brews at Costco.  Kight revealed their plan to sell twenty-two ounce “bombers” in eight-packs, “hopefully by Thanksgiving.”  Included in the pack?  Two bottles of Big Eye IPA, two bottles of Sculpin IPA, two bottles of Black Marlin Porter and two bottles of Calico Amber Ale.  Also available will be their Bloody Mary Mix, shrink-wrapped in a two-pack.  The brewery isn’t just inundating San Diego, but other countries as well.  Nagano Trading, a Japanese distributor, sent their empty kegs to Ballast Point in order to satisfy the growing Japanese market.  Six-packs of Big Eye, Calico, and pallets of assorted twenty-two ounce bottles are leaving San Diego next Friday en route to Puerto Rico, where there is a burgeoning home brew contingent.  The world’s the limit for Ballast Point.
