Over the weekend the New York Times reported that the beer label on San Marcos beer brewer Lost Abbey had caught the ire of witches because of a now controversial image of a young witch burning at the stake. Come Tuesday, beer columnist Peter Rowe writing in the SD Union-Tribune jumped into the kettle by pointing out that Lost Abbey brewmaster Tomme Arthur was not going to change the label of his Witch’s Wit one whit. Playing out the spat in the media for a bit longer gives Lost Abbey priceless brand recognition nationwide. Not that the Port family needed any more recognition after cleaning up at GABF. Time will tell if Arthur’s decision results into a spell of good or bad luck for the Belgian-style brew haus.
